Spanning an area of 211.31 square miles, with a population of 53,695 according to the 2020 census, Galveston is the county seat of Galveston County and is the second-largest city in the county. Positioned at the southern end of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area, Galveston is situated on the northwestern coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
